"Coal-based materials attending the energetic problems"

Instituto Nacional del Carbón - Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (INCAR-CSIC)

The Instituto Nacional del CarbÓn (INCAR) is located in La Corredoria-Oviedo (Asturias, Spain) and belongs to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), this latter being a Public Research Organism ascribed to the Ministry of Economía y Competitividad. The INCAR is included into the area of Chemical Science and Technology, one of the eight research areas of the CSIC.

INCAR-CSIC participates in the project by means of the Composites Group, which is adscribed to the department of  Materials Chemistry.

Staff of the composites group.

The activity of this group is mainly addressed to the preparation of coal- and petroleum-based carbon material precursors (i.e., graphene, activated carbons, carbon fibres, composites, synthetic graphties) for different applications. These applications include: traditional application in the aluminum and steel sectors (e.g., carbon anodes and graphite electrodes), energy storage (e.g., supercapacitors and vanadium flow redox batteries), materials for using in extreme conditions (e.g., nuclear fusion and aeronautics), fine chemsitry and environment (e.g., catalysts and proactive supports for catalysts). for more information, please visit the web page of the group (http://www.incar.csic.es/composite).

The role of INCAR-CSIC in the Supercoal project is the coordination of the project (WP-0 and WP-7), the synthesis of graphites and graphene materials from coal derivatives (WP-4), the fabrication of composites AC/Gs (WP-5) and the test of the samples obtained as active electrode materials in hybrid energy storage systems operating in aqueous redox electrolytes.

This project is financially supported by the European Union within the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) programme (Grant Agreement No. RFCR-CT-2015-00006).
