"Coal-based materials attending the energetic problems"

Industrial Química del Nalón, S.A. (IQNSA)

Industrial Química del Nalón, S.A. (IQNSA) is an independent and private family Company whose activity is focused on the carbo-chemical sector. It has been operating its own technological processes, based on solid entrepreneurial values since its foundation in 1943. Its facilities are located at Trubia-Oviedo (Spain).

Its business activities are focused in two different lines:

Carbo-chemical:

The Company's carbo-chemical activity is based on the distillation of high temperature coal tar which is obtained as a by-product in coke manufacture used in blast furnaces to produce pig iron.

Química del Nalón, S.A. develops its carbo-chemical activity at the Trubia site, in a set of autonomous plants, designed with the Company's own technology, which operate as a fully-integrated unit.  Química del Nalón, S.A. is the most important distiller in Southern Europe and one of the most important international pitch and naphthalene manufacturers.

Linked to the carbo-chemical activity, there are port facilities in Aviles (Spain) and Szczecin (Poland), used as a logistics center for the Baltic area and Eastern Europe.

Coal Tar Distillation capacity:

·         Continuous distillation plant: 250,000 mt. coal tar/year.

·         Batch distillation plant: 120,000 mt. coal tar/year.

·         Total distillation capacity: 370,000 mt. coal tar/year.

Coke:

The manufacture of coke is another activity of  Química del Nalón, S.A., and is currently carried out at the Sama de Langreo production site.

The annual production capacity is 130,000 Tm, which makes Química del Nalón, S.A. the leading producer of foundry coke in Spain and one of the main European producers, exporting to numerous countries in Europe and throughout the world.

The most important applications are in iron foundries, non-ferrous smelting, insulation sector, the chemical and sugar industries, ferrous alloys, etc.

The raw material employed are mainly coking coals, imported mostly from the U.S.A..

The main objective of Química del Nalon S.A. in this project is focused in developing polymerized-isotropic/mesophase coke from coal-derived liquids (coal tars and anthracene oils), to be used as raw materials in the design and preparation of activated carbons (ACs), graphene (G) and composites (AC/Gs).

This activity is summarized in the following work packages:

·   - WP1: Preparation of pitch-like products from coal-derived liquids and cokes/graphites (July/15-Dic/17).

·   - WP2: Preparation of polymerized isotropic and mesophase pitches (July/15-Dic/17).

·   - WP4: Synthesis and characterization of Graphenes (July/15-March/18).

    - WP-8. Global evaluation and assessment of the project .
